Beth Kephart Dangerous Neighbors is a slip of a novel that packs an emotional impact, and I do not think I was ready for the raw insight into what it really means, "the guardian of my sister." Should be at less than 200 pages, the novel feels like a Polaroid snapshot - and focuses exclusively on what Katherine has a roof with no intention of returning to the soil the same way they came brought. From the beginning, lyrical language Kephart had caught me completely in the twins story. As readers, we know Anna is away from the beginning - but the circumstances remain a mystery. I liked that the facts have been slow, as the unfolding of paper, and showed that we are introduced to each character in their own sweet time. I have another novel that so perfectly the painful heartache-inducing way to each other in the sisters encounter forward to fight in their lives - and in the process, pull away from each other. With a sister three years younger than me, I felt every word of what Kephart expressed to Katherine perception of Bennett was a "threat" to the safe and happy private life she had with Anna. For the first time in her life, Katherine was no longer the most important person in the world to her sister. . . and when that happens, it breaks your heart. Of course you want to be your sister happy, and of course they may want to be loved. But that requires a little to lose them, too. Katherine Anna lost in so many ways long before she was really gone - and that is the saddest part of the story. It was Katherine, I wanted friends and help them through the darkness, and I could not help but get angry at Anna for being. . . well, that Anna. After completing the story, I closed it and sat back for a beat or two. I liked the book, yes, and I found myself tearing through it at breakneck speeds - especially if I thought I was getting close, to learn what really happened Anna. But after it was all over, I could not help but feel vaguely dissatisfied. . . mainly because I wanted more about William, a sort of 1876 version of "Animal Whisperer" and the burgeoning feelings for him Katherine had to learn. I wanted to see Katherine happy, especially after everything she had been through, but I got only an indication of the resolution I wanted. However, it did not dampen my enjoyment of the whole novel. wild ride, Dangerous Neighbors swept a deep down, thought-provoking story with memorable details and three-dimensional characters filled. It is also my first reading of Kephart, a popular young adult author, and I definitely do not intend to allow it to be my last. Fans of historical fiction is a philosophical story with lots of atmosphere and historical details that I googled the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition on my lunch break had to be found. Although the book focuses on two teenage girls, I hope that will not not until this dissuade a usual readers to check out teen fiction from picking. There's nothing pedestrian about the letter, which was quite literary, and it makes a fine addition to the young adult historical fiction genre.
